The Dahab oil painting is the artist’s tribute to the famous tourist town of Dahab situated in the Sinai Peninsula in the Mid East. Dahab is a beach town world renowned for its excellent scuba diving and wind surfing friendly waters. It is one the most popular destination amongst backpackers of the world. While during her one visit the artist noticed many paintings of the town being painted by artists there. The artist was intrigued by the fact that although all these paintings were a tribute to the town, most of the paintings were quite narrowed tributes, meaning either the paintings were focused on the coral waters, or the waterfront or a broad cityscape. It was this moment when the artist decided to attempt an inclusive tribute to the city. The most essential elements of the town, namely the coral waters, the town waterfront, the esplanade, winds and the desert background had to be included if a fitting tribute to the town was to be painted.

In this oil painting you can see how the elements were put together to get a beautiful and authentic landscape. A hill view design forms the basics of this oil painting covering the beach, the waterfront and the sea, with sandy mountains as a backdrop. The water near the beach was painted in a peculiar shade of green and blue to represent the coral reefs. The strokes of painting brush on the water and near the beach were stretched to represent the wind surfing element. Another important element was the name of the town itself. The word Dahab means gold in Arabic; hence the profuse use of golden color in the sky and even in water as legend is that gold was washed down the desert into the sea bed. The deeper sea has been painted in a very dark blue shade to represent that beyond the tourism and tranquility of this desert waterfront lies a troubled region, a region marked with conflict and ground realties sharply in contrast to joys of this beach town.

As the painting progressed and so did the complexities to present the true Dahab to its viewer a balance was found in the color palette of the sky. It was decided to paint the skies with shades of white, grey, crimson, gold, orange and yellow with the idea that a town or nature can only present the viewer with choices. It is up to the viewer what choices they make and what colors they choose which in end represents any town or place in their perspective. Dahab for a
traveler is the destination of his journey but for an artist, it is the journey.
